CYC Thursday Series April 15 to Aug. 26

Thursday night racing is a family affair for sailors of all ages, abilities and appetites.

This year's Thursday night racing season begins April 15 with the usual 18:00 start time in Bellingham Bay. Corinthian Yacht Club Race Committee chairman Bill Apt invites sailors to a fleet meeting at 18:00 Thursday, April 1 at Jose Bartlett's house (3656 Toad Lake Road). No Foolin!
Get your entry forms along with the race packets. online or at this April 1 meeting. The meeting will cover who is on the committee boat, its need for additional crew, and the mysteries of handicapping, signal flags, alternative protest methods for this no-protest series and scoring. The number of starts, probably three, will be decided at this meeting as well.
The proposed 2010 schedule is four series of five races each through Aug. 26, plus a long-distance race to Vendovi Island on Saturday, July 17. All the dates are on the new CYC Google Calendar, which will be updated periodically. You can even subscribe to the CYC Google Calendar on your computer or smart phone.
Ready for sailing? The cost for racing will be $45 for all 21 races or $15 for a single series.
And this year, we hope to have the race results posted on the Web site weekly.
Preparing for the new season of friendly racing "has been very much a group effort," says Apt, who is being assisted by Sean Jones (Coast Guard permits), Todd Koetje (race calculations), Jose Bartlett (scheduling and general planning), Gary Baker (committee boat for first series), and Randy Nulle (committee boat for second series). Apt says he is still looking for two or three more people to crew the committee boat.
In a spirit of cooperation with the Bellingham Yacht Club, CYC is inviting all BYC boats that have not previously raced on Thursdays with the CYC, to race in our Thursday night series free of charge. In exchange, CYC members who have paid the full series fee may participate in the BYC long-distance races for free. (For scoring purposes, you'll need a current PHRF certificate and insurance waiver.) The BYC races are to Vendovi April 17; Around Lummi May 8; Point Roberts June 19; Governor's Point Sept. 11; Marmetta Cup Sept. 25; and Jack Island Oct. 16.

Racing Rules Seminar, March 30
In other racing news, the BYC and Bellingham Etchells Fleet 16 invites CYC members to a racing rules seminar with Dick Rose at 6:30 pm. Tuesday, March 30 at the BYC Ward Room. Rose, who writes the "Rules" column for Sailing World, is one of the leading authorities on racing rules.
The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for students, with proceeds going to the BYC Jr. Sailing Fund.

PacRim Regatta, June 6-11
The Pacific Rim Regatta, organized by the Bellingham Yacht Club and Bellingham Sister Cities, will be June 6-11 at Victoria, BC. The history of this race is rich with friendship and adventure. Although the deadline for applying to be part of the team is past, applications are still being accepted.
